001 Clone Chaos
[A: Lounge - Abel and Cain]
[Cain and Abel have been left alone, smaller brother still clinging to the taller one like a limpet. He knows he should let go, but this is so confusing and there is an ache in his chest that says all is not right between them. It's wrong to see his brother and not look into an identical face (albeit set in a scowl), it's wrong to see distress and grief in his eyes when they meet, and he wants it to go back to how it should be.]
...
[B: Kitchen - Rachel, Esther and Nanako]
[Having left the two failures alone the three girls have adjourned to the kitchen, where everything is set up and ready for the perfect mother to cook and clean for her family.
Or something like that.]
[C: Phone - Open to All]
[Some time later, after the emotional rollercoaster of that talk with Abel and still somewhat shell-shocked, Cain has come to himself enough for it to sink in there were others trapped here like them, and if they are all going to be working together then they needed to get acquainted. So there's a young boy's voice over the telephone, sounding calm and friendly. It's just a shame the background noise is less soothing.]
Ah-- Good evening, people of Mayfield. My name is Cain Knightlord and I've just arrived, along with most of the others in this house. Miss Alucard was already here; but the other new people are Abel Nightroad, Esther... [He didn't get her last name, so there's a small awkward pause.] ...and Nanako Dojima. I won't bore you with questions, Miss Alucard has been kind enough to explain most of what we need to know, but--
[What he says next is lost, as there comes a feminine screech from the kitchen, ranting something about 'housewives' and 'lazy priests making their own breakfast'. There's a crash of something heavy and squawk, before finally Cain's voice is audible again.]
--so I'm sure you'll agree with me. If it's not too much trouble, we'd love to get to know you all in return, so please don't be strangers.
[ooc: Part C is open to all and might be responded to by everyone in the house (Cain, Abel, Esther, Nanako and Rachel.]

he wishes he could go back in time and do it all again with him. he-- remembers, much as he's buried those memories with so much effort for the sake of his sanity. buried, deep, deep... but Cain has what feels like someone else's life returning to him with stark clarity. he can see bright, cold, fluorescent lights in his mind's eye.]
Seth was... jealous, when she found out we didn't share. [and Lilith had laughed when she found their sticky jelly-covered faces sprawled haphazardly and tangled in the sheets come morning, luckily before someone else had. his chest is tight... ;(]
no subject
There was real grief in his eyes, deep and more soul-searing than Cain could possibly hope to comprehend. He was scared of what had happened, scared how it had altered his twin. But, most of all... he was scared he had changed so much they weren't one any more.]
Is this...
[He stops, exhaling raggedly and tries again. He needs to pull himself together, it's not helping anyone to behave like a child.]
Do you think this is... real?
no subject
I don't... know. I don't know...
[his rational mind is screaming that it's utterly impossible; the entirety is so ridiculous and all the signs point to some sort of hallucination; trick; illusion -- perhaps he's caught in some kind of drug-induced haze, for all he knows... but this...
his brother's fear; the tug that fills someplace that had been hollowed and empty even... while his brother had remained beside him as...
...
it's-- real. this howls at him it's real.]
I know it's-- scary. But real or not, I'll... I'm going to keep you safe. I promise.
no subject
Finding himself unceremoniously tugged onto Abel's lap, and even more oddly that he fits there perfectly, he curled up a little and pressed his ear to the ever-comforting sound of his brother's heartbeat.]
I know you will, that's what you do.
[Silly Abel, as though Cain could ever doubt who his protector was. No matter how old or young, no matter if this was reality or not.]
no subject
ah. he's so... tiny.
his arms pull him tighter still, possessive... protective, already so torn on and afraid of all of this.]
...I don't... remember this happening at all. You would've told me if you could...
So that must mean that you get back home, safely. And... it'll all be okay. [if this is real. ...totally half-convinced he's absolutely insane.]
no subject
But he refrains from asking any for now, simply closing his eyes and revelling in the sound of that familiar heartbeat. No matter what might separate them - time, space, psychotic murderous nanomachines - this remained the same.]
I think... it has to be real.
[Standing up on Abel's lap, he wrapped small arms around his brother's head and tugged it into his chest, so he could hear Cain's heartbeat.]
See? We still beat at the same time. We're still the same inside where it matters, and that can't be false.
no subject
ten years old, and this boy... is already so much more wise than his brother at 976. Abel hesitates, briefly... before he's pressing his ear to hear the steady, soft thump of his twi-- ah. ...little brother's... heart.
resonates... just as it always had.
his arms fold around him in turn, squeezing tight.]
...Cain...
[God help him. if this is... real, then... what the hell does that mean?]
no subject
[It's not, there are so many things about this that aren't okay in the slightest. But he still feels like the older brother, and Abel is his responsibility. It's not hard to see the distress and vulnerability, it had never been hard to see that in Abel for the people who had truly cared for him.]
I'll look after you too, so don't worry.
no subject
wow, he's really pathetic, eh. he's starting to realize how much he's let this slip, and he's clearing his throat, dialing back. get it together, Nightroad... get it together, get it together...]
...don't worry. One upside to being all grown up, is... I can take care of myself! Really. You'll be so impressed, Cain. I even button my own shirts and-- everything...
[w-weak chuckle, and he nuzzles his face against his chest as if wiping nose on his brother's duck-patterned pajamas teasingly. clearly some humor will make this all better.]
no subject
It's okay to be scared, Abel. I am.
[He offered Abel a small smile after that admittance, laying a small hand on the crown of his head protectively.]
Shirts can be tough sometimes, I won't judge you if you can't handle it all the time.
no subject
no, he'd never really grown out of it, had he.
he rests his chin at his shoulder gently, rubbing Cain's back reassuringly. he can... figure this out later...
he missed you, he missed you, he missed you...]
Shirt are... really tough! [sob. he wishes that sounded a little less wobbly. he is totally not gonna woobie on you.]
no subject
You don't have to cry.
[Mainly because it breaks his heart, and it might make him cry too.]
When you... can't button it up, I'll do it for you. I won't let you go out shirtless, not ever.
[So maybe shirts had become a metaphor - a really BAD metaphor - but the sentiment was clear.]
no subject
...You always were better with shirts than me. [he lightly fixes the lay of duckie pj's on Cain's shoulders, plucking at the fabric.] I learned all I know from you.
no subject
You got different, as well as tall.
no subject
...A lot is different.
I'm supposed to be your father, for one. Someone really messed that one up, eh?
no subject
[Not unless he counted the male scientists, which he most certainly didn't.]
I think I prefer you as my brother.
no subject
...That's how we're meant to be, right?
[is this real? he-- almost wants to squeeze him so tight and keep him there, protect him from everything if it's true. his mind is whirling, overwhelmed, and it's all so strange without that other... voice in the back of his head, and--]
It's going to be okay. [going to be okay. all of it will be okay. don't think... not yet, just. wait... absorb, a bit... he's here again; dwell on that, and...]
no subject
Curling his arms around Abel's neck and leaning in, acutely aware of just how much taller and stronger his brother was now, he pressed a kiss to his cheek.]
Of course it will, I won't let it be not okay.
no subject
he kisses his cheek right... back, only a tiny hesitation-- still so unsure of himself, mind still doubting itself and the validity of this situation even if his heart had solidified it as reality.]
Esther, is-- she's a good person. She and I will get us out of here. Miss Nanako, and Miss Rachel too...
no subject
[How could he do anything different? Even if it weren't Abel, the person he trusts with all his soul, he was a naturally trusting individual. He wanted to believe the best in people; and if Abel said that Esther was good and could get them out of there, he didn't doubt it.]
I bet bigger me is missing you, and little you is probably mad I didn't show up for breakfast.
no subject
I'd remember something like that, right? My big brother disappearing to a strange town with a big me. [he taps his nose gently.] So I think it's safe to say... that you'll be back before he can miss you. [he hopes...]
no subject
Clearly you don't remember little you, if you think he won't already have missed me.
no subject
[so cute, Cain. ;;]
no subject
[So many issues left unsaid, so many things left to discuss; but both have the worst coping mechanism ever. So it's time to make jokes and sweep the situation under the rug, obviously.]
no subject
...yes, best coping mechanisms ever.
he pulls him into another squeezey-hug.]
...Munchkin. Munchkin-munchkin-munchkin.
