001 Clone Chaos
[A: Lounge - Abel and Cain]
[Cain and Abel have been left alone, smaller brother still clinging to the taller one like a limpet. He knows he should let go, but this is so confusing and there is an ache in his chest that says all is not right between them. It's wrong to see his brother and not look into an identical face (albeit set in a scowl), it's wrong to see distress and grief in his eyes when they meet, and he wants it to go back to how it should be.]
...
[B: Kitchen - Rachel, Esther and Nanako]
[Having left the two failures alone the three girls have adjourned to the kitchen, where everything is set up and ready for the perfect mother to cook and clean for her family.
Or something like that.]
[C: Phone - Open to All]
[Some time later, after the emotional rollercoaster of that talk with Abel and still somewhat shell-shocked, Cain has come to himself enough for it to sink in there were others trapped here like them, and if they are all going to be working together then they needed to get acquainted. So there's a young boy's voice over the telephone, sounding calm and friendly. It's just a shame the background noise is less soothing.]
Ah-- Good evening, people of Mayfield. My name is Cain Knightlord and I've just arrived, along with most of the others in this house. Miss Alucard was already here; but the other new people are Abel Nightroad, Esther... [He didn't get her last name, so there's a small awkward pause.] ...and Nanako Dojima. I won't bore you with questions, Miss Alucard has been kind enough to explain most of what we need to know, but--
[What he says next is lost, as there comes a feminine screech from the kitchen, ranting something about 'housewives' and 'lazy priests making their own breakfast'. There's a crash of something heavy and squawk, before finally Cain's voice is audible again.]
--so I'm sure you'll agree with me. If it's not too much trouble, we'd love to get to know you all in return, so please don't be strangers.
[ooc: Part C is open to all and might be responded to by everyone in the house (Cain, Abel, Esther, Nanako and Rachel.]

Yes?
no subject
[he shifts a little further, so that blue eyes could meet blue. he looks apologetic, guilty. ;(]
...we have to be quiet about... the UNASF, and being... clones. [words he hasn't let leave his lips in so long, it doesn't seem real.]
no subject
[He doesn't understand, that's like asking him to hide every part of his life until this day. Where was he supposed to say he had been, if he wasn't even allowed to mention the UNASF?]
no subject
there's a soft frown of consternation at his brow.]
...Right now, I don't know how safe it is... or how well it'll go over in a place like this. [that at least, was true.] We have to keep what little cards we have close to our chests, okay?
no subject
[He pulls back enough to look into Abel's face, something confused and a little guarded in his eyes.]
What will I say if people ask about my home, or my life? I know you want to protect me, but cutting out the UNASF is cutting out everything.
no subject
...Be vague. You don't need to give details.
The less they know, the better it'll be... until we find out more about what's going on here. [he absolutely doesn't want either of them to end up... puppets, tools again. 'United States, 1950's' wasn't very reassuring on that point.]
no subject
...Alright, if that's what you want.
[Abel will tell him what's going on in time, he has faith in that. Until then he could hide everything about himself, he was well practised at obfuscation anyway.]
no subject
...alas.
he gives a tiny nod of his head.]
...It'll be okay.
no subject
--shame he had no way of knowing just how bad Abel was at seeing others' pain, or what would become of it.]
...
no subject
It will. You're-- my brother, big or little or anything in between, right? So...
[h... ha; he is starting to wonder if that's really sunk in himself.]
no subject
[He paused, shaking his head where it was pressed against Abel's, fingers fidgeting with the sleeve of his pajamas.]
So why do you want to hide everything about me? Are you ashamed?
1/2
he looks... shocked, for a moment. what...? ashamed, of...]
no subject
[b-bro ;;
he quickly reaches up to cup his cheeks again, shaking his head vehemently and paling a bit at the prospect. Abel was hardly ashamed of-- Cain. the real... Cain. this little boy, who was easy to differentiate from the monster who wore his face later in life.]
...No. It isn't... like that at all, Cain. Not at all...
no subject
[He can see Abel is telling the truth, the vehemence of his reply was enough to tell that.]
It can't be that it's not safe; the UNASF are world-renowned, it's not like we'd be hiding anything people don't already know.
no subject
We age slower, and... appearances are deceiving. [it's not wholly a lie...] It's been a long time since those days. The world has changed...
no subject
[He's ten, not an idiot. Far from it, actually. Gaze a little more piercing as he leaned back to look down on his brother.]
You have to be sixty, at the very most, more likely closer to fifty. Even if the UNASF had disbanded, something that momentous isn't going to be forgotten in a few short decades.
They colonised Mars, Abel. They successfully created advanced human clones. No matter how the world has changed, I don't understand why that has to be hidden?

[it's a little sharp, as he pulls himself to his feet with the boy still in his lap -- if only to deposit him gently upright himself on the floor. there's a sort of hardness of old in his eyes that speak of that same stubborn will that hasn't died centuries later -- but there is an edge, a strain to it, now. he's trying to keep things together]
...Please don't question this.
no subject
He doesn't have a good explanation, does he? For some reason, he wanted to keep all that Cain was a secret... and now he comes to properly think on it, Esther hadn't known who he was either.
And Abel obviously knew her well.
What was going on? How would someone who knew Abel well not know Cain automatically? Was Abel really ashamed of him now? Had something happened? It's looking that way and he...
His chest is tight, hurts in a way that was new and alien. Yet his expression remains calm as he nods, stepping away from Abel as he was put back on his feet.]
Okay, if that's what you want.
[He'll hide, he'll be vague. Should he even have told Esther they were brothers? Is even that a secret? Hnn. He feels like he's going to cry, throat scratchy and eyes burning; he needs to get out of here before he does.]
I should go and get into something other than pajamas.
no subject
had he hurt him...? does he really-- think he's ashamed?]
C... ain, wait.
no subject
I really should get dressed.
no subject
[stop him, or let him go? his heart is tugging painfully, indecision and masochistic self-loathing telling him he's going to mess this up regardless, isn't he? maybe it's better... to give him some time. what explanation could he offer that would ease his mind, after all?]
...I'm sorry.
no subject
...
[Heading for the bedroom now; good job little-big brother.]
no subject
he ducks his head, at a loss...]
no subject
It hurts Abel isn't even going to try; to spare them both, Cain walks into the bedroom he woke up in and closes the door.
Sinking into a tiny ball of woe against the wall, he quietly cries. He won't display this to anyone, but he's alone so it doesn't matter. He just... doesn't understand, he doesn't want to be something Abel wants to hide.]
no subject
...
he waits a moment longer, hoping Cain will call for him or say something more, but... there's nothing.
so Abel hesitates only as long as he can stand knowing what he's done, before he turns to join the others in the kitchen... and leave Cain to his peace ;(]
